CMST 2012: Introduction to Film

Nature and function of film as a mode of communication; basic language of cinema; selected films screened and studied.
ILC - Inquiry & Analysis

CMST 3012: History of Film

Survey course on the development of film as a phenomenon of cultural and aesthetic communication as well as a set of technologies and industrial practices. We will screen and study films that are especially significant to selected developments in the history of cinema, focusing on American and European cinemas.

Undergraduate/Graduate Bridge Courses

CMST 4142: Pandemic Performance

This course will look at the events surrounding the global shutdown of 2020 and its effects on live theater, with a focus on the innovative ways that performing artists continued to create, perform, and engage with audiences both near and far. Students will watch, listen, and participate in performances created for telephone, postal mail, drive-ins, Zoom, and other online platforms, as inspiration for their own original performances.

CMST 7943: Seminar in Performance & Culture

Theories and research exploring the relations between performance and culture central to the field of Performance Studies. Emphasis on two main trajectories: performance as a subject of cultural inquiry and performance as a method of cultural invention.
